Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, the Seattle hip-hop duo, was named best new artist at the 56th Grammy Awards on Sunday, punctuating a whirlwind year in which two of the group’s singles went to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

The new artist nomination was one of three received by the rapper and producer in the Grammys’ major categories. “The Heist” was nominated for album of the year, while “Same Love,” inspired by the struggle for marriage equality, earned a nod as song of the year.

In the duo’s first chart-topper, “Thrift Shop,” Macklemore brags about buying his clothes at Goodwill rather than spending “50 dollars for a T-shirt.” “Can’t Hold Us” proudly emphasizes the group’s indie-rap status, with the MC proclaiming, “We did it our way.”

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis beat out Kacey Musgraves, Ed Sheeran, James Blake and Kendrick Lamar for best new artist. Last year Fun. won the prize along with song of the year for its hit “We Are Young”; other recent winners include Bon Iver, Esperanza Spalding and the Zac Brown Band.

The Grammys are determined by about 13,000 voting members. The eligibility period for nominated recordings was Oct. 1, 2012, to Sept. 30, 2013. The 56th awards are being held at Staples Center and telecast on CBS. They are broadcast live except for viewers on the West Coast.
