‘Jack Reacher’ fundraiser screening at Lincoln Center postponed

A special fundraising screening of Paramount Pictures’ “Jack Reacher” at Lincoln Center in New York City, with Tom Cruise in attendance, has been postponed following the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., last Friday.

In a statement on the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s website, the organization writes, “Out of respect for the families who lost loved ones in Newtown, CT, we are postponing tonight’s fundraising event with Tom Cruise to benefit the 50th anniversary fund which supports K-12 education and new artist programs. We extend our love and condolences to our neighbors. Our community grieves with yours.”

No new date for the delayed fundraiser was announced.

Paramount Pictures released a statement of support, addressing both the Lincoln Center screening and the film’s delayed premiere, which was to have taken place in Pittsburgh on Saturday. Paramount postponed that event on Friday, following news of the shooting which took the lives of 27 people, including the shooter.

Instead, Cruise will attend a lower-key screening for fans in the city on Wednesday, minus the red carpet celebration.

“The filmmakers and Tom Cruise convey their heartfelt sadness and their deep condolences to the families during this time,” the studio said in a statement.

The events of the film, based on the novel “One Shot” by Lee Child, are eerily close to reality, as the film deals with a sniper killing people in a public place.
