‘The Revenant,’ ‘The Martian’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ win Art Directors Guild Awards

The production designers of “The Martian,” “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “The Revenant” won the 20th Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards on Sunday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Jack Fisk won in the period film category for “The Revenant,” and Colin Gibson earned his guild award for the fantasy film “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Arthur Max took home the honor in the contemporary film category for “The Martian.”

On the television side, production designer Deborah Riley won for three episodes of “Game of Thrones” in the one-hour period or fantasy single-camera series category; Steve Arnold won for two episodes of “House of Cards” in the contemporary single-camera series category.

Mark Worthington took home the guild honor for television movie or limited series for the “Checking In” installment of “American Horror Story: Hotel.” Denise Pizzini won for half-hour single-camera series for two episodes of “The Muppets,” and John Schaffner received his award for multi-camera series for three episodes of “The Big Bang Theory.”

Derek McLane won in the awards or event special category for “The Oscars: 2015.” Jess Gonchor earned the award for short format: web series, music video or commercial for Apple Music’s “The History of Sound.” Gary Kordan won for variety, reality or competition series for two episodes of “Key & Peele.”

Director David O. Russell (“Silver Linings Playbook,” “Joy”) won the guild’s Cinematic Imagery Award, and TCM host Robert Osborne received the guild’s inaugural William Cameron Menzies Award for his work in championing classic films.

Scenic artist Bill Anderson, matte artist Harrison Ellenshaw, set designer William J. Newmon II and production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein received Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Four women were inducted into the guild’s Hall of Fame: production designer Carmen Dillon, production designer and illustrator Dorothea Holt Redmond, production and costume designer Patricia Norris and art director and set designer Dianne Wager.
