A Tribe Called Quest will disband (again)

When A Tribe Called Quest performs a pair of shows in New York next month, it will be the act’s last -- at least for now.

Kanye West tapped the pioneering alt hip-hop group to join his upcoming Yeezus tour for two shows, one at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Nov. 20 and another at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 24.

After that, Tribe members say the clan will put a stop to performing live. The news was delieved via a tweet from Tribe anchor Q-Tip.

“In August, ATCQ did our last show FOR Cali,” Q-Tip tweeted Tuesday. “It’s only right we do our FINAL 2 joints where we started...NYC.”

After reuniting at this year’s South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, to play a gig with Prince, the group performed a series of live shows over the summer, including a headlining slot at the H2O Music Festival at Los Angeles State Historic Park in August and London’s Wireless Festival.

The hip-hop group hasn’t recorded together in 15 years, but Q-Tip told Rolling Stone that he would likely log studio time with his Tribe mates for his own “The Last Zulu,” his long gestating debut for West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint. Q-Tip’s last solo release was “Kamaal/The Abstract,” which was released in 2009 after being shelved in 2001.

Is the split for good? Who knows? The Tribe first quit after 1998’s “The Love Movement” and then reunited to play Rock the Bells in 2004. Tribe toured sporadically after that.

One reunion trek a decade after the act first parted wasn’t smooth, and much of the group’s tension was captured in Michael Rapaport’s critically acclaimed 2011 documentary, “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest.”
