Six-night Angel City Jazz Festival tabs Dave Holland, Robert Glasper

The Angel City Jazz Festival announced the lineup for its sixth annual installment coming this fall, and once again its menu of concerts offers a broad sample from the vanguard of music in 2013.

Scheduled to begin on Friday, Oct. 4, under the theme “Metamorphosis: Artists on the Cutting Edge of Change,” the festival co-produced by the Jazz Bakery and Angel City Arts will span six concerts through Oct. 13 with headliners including Dave Holland, Greg Osby and Robert Glasper, whose R&B; and hip-hop-leaning band the Experiment has become one of the biggest stories in jazz.

Flautist and recent Chicago transplant Nicole Mitchell will open the festival with a free concert with her Sun Dial Ensemble at LACMA, which will also feature this year’s winner of the festival’s annual young artists competition. On Oct. 5, Holland will appear at UCLA’s Royce Hall with his electric ensemble Prism in a show presented in association with the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA. Guitarist John Scofield’s Überjam Band will open the night.

TIMELINE: Summer’s must-see concerts

In a new and natural combination for the forward-looking festival, two of the festival dates will be paired with screenings of the acclaimed 2009 documentary “Icons Among Us,” a four-part series and feature film that chronicles the recent rise of what trumpeter Terence Blanchard called a “quiet revolution” in jazz.

The documentary features interviews with a number of boundary-pushing artists, including Glasper, who will perform with his band the Experiment for two sets bookending the film’s third episode on Saturday, Oct. 12. The appearance marks a double-header of local festival dates for Glasper, who also performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival in June.

Two more episodes of “Icons Among Us” will screen alongside the Angel City’s marquee and most festival-like event at the John Anson Ford Amphitheater on Oct. 6, a show that will feature Osby joined by clarinetist Anat Cohen, the Richard Sears Group with Albert “Tootie” Heath, the Yosvany Terry Quintet and the genre-mashing group Kneebody.

Rounding out the bill, New York City’s eclectic Claudia Quintet will perform at REDCAT with a trio featuring hard-hitting drummer Jim Black on Friday, Oct. 11, and drummer Dafnis Prieto closes out the festival at the same venue with his sextet on Oct. 13.
