Black Friday: Record Store Day brings bounty of limited vinyl

In what’s becoming an annual ray of light amid the consumerist darkness of Black Friday, the music retail marketing movement known as Record Store Day has once again put forth a bounty of limited-edition music to be available the day after Thanksgiving.

Black Friday 2012 will no doubt see L.A. retailers such as Origami, Amoeba, Vacation and Permanent with lines akin to those at big-box merchants, but more hipster-heavy. Instead of wrestling over the last Wii U on the shelf, however, music geeks will be diving for the limited-edition picture disc of Biz Markie’s “The Biz Never Sleeps.”

Is Dad not down with the Biz? Others looking to knock out their holiday shopping lists perhaps could snag him a 45 of “Hallelujah,” featuring Leonard Cohen’s original version on one side and Jeff Buckley’s on the other. Or maybe a similar split take on “This Christmas” with Donny Hathaway and Cee Lo Greenis more his speed. Is your uncle an aging metalhead? He’ll get a laugh out of a picture disc of screamer King Diamond’s “No Presents for Christmas.”

Of note to Angelenos might be a series of 45s from Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band: Picture sleeved singles of “Abba Zaba,” “Plastic Factory” and “Upon the Me-Oh-My,” as well as one from former Byrd Gene Clark. Wes Anderson completists might want to find the 10-inch EPfrom “Moonrise Kingdom” featuring Alexandre Desplat’s original score and a track from Mark Mothersbaugh.

The voluminous list is deep. Be forewarned: The lines in the past have been equally so, and not all participating stores get all the goods. Call ahead to confirm they’re getting what you’re chasing. Also, vinyl collectors may appear too skinny and meek, but when a 7-inch of White Stripes doing the song “Hotel Yorba” atthe Hotel Yorba is involved, they will drive with as much fury as a desperate Wal-Mart shopper. Be careful out there.
