Clint Eastwood’s soliloquy about unoccupied furniture has been the most entertaining spectacle to emerge from this year’s party conventions so far, although the Democratic Party will make its own go of it with a big roster of pop musicians this week.

The Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., wraps up with a concert at Bank of America Stadium on Thursday, with headliners including Foo Fighters, Mary J. Blige, Earth Wind & Fire, James Taylor and Marc Anthony singing the national anthem.

It follows two other night of performances, with the national anthem performed by saxophonist Branford Marsalis and Amber Riley. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presides over the week’s events.

Perhaps it’s not too surprising that pop musicians at large would tend to lean toward President Obama. Republicans have had an unexpectedly rough time incorporating music into their campaign events this year. Their travails include artists sending cease-and-desist letters, promoters for an anti-Obama concert bowing out from low sales, and Tom Morello’s succinct thanks-but-no-thanks rebuttal to Paul Ryan’s Rage Against the Machine fandom.

But all is not lost, GOP -- you’ll always have Dave Mustaine and Hank Williams Jr. to rally the faithful.
