Justin Timberlake is the latest performer added to the lineup for the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, the network announced Thursday.

Pop’s comeback kid tied Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with a leading six nominations, and he will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

The honor, which celebrates “innovation and artistry in music video creation and impact,” has previously gone to Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, REM, the Beastie Boys, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Timberlake’s famous ex, Britney Spears, who was the last artist to receive the award in 2011.

Earlier this year, Timberlake marked his return to music with “The 20/20 Experience,” his first album in seven years and so far the year’s biggest-selling album, with 2 million copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The sequel, “The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2,” will arrive Sept. 30.

The emotional wallop of a video he shot for “Mirrors” garnered the bulk of Timberlake’s VMA nominations, including for video of the year, male video, pop video and editing. His Jay Z-assisted comeback single, “Suit & Tie,” is also up for collaboration and direction -- no surprise considering he tapped acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher (“The Social Network,” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) to direct the clip.

Timberlake joins previously announced performers Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke.

The 2013 VMAs will air live Aug. 25 from New York City.
