Premiere: Watch video for Mindy Smith’s ‘Snowed In’
Pop & Hiss premieres the title track from singer-songwriter Mindy Smith’s new five-song holiday EP “Snowed In.”
The Long Island-born, Nashville-based musician returns to the seasonal music she explored movingly in her 2007 album “My Holiday” because “a lot of people really gravitated to the holiday record, more than I anticipated. When I made it, of course, you hope that happens.”
The song “Snowed In” approaches Christmas as a time to spend with a loved one, set to a wistful melody that Smith sings with sweetness and a trace of melancholy.

“That song is very relevant in my life at this time,” she said from her home, where she also creates short films and videos accompanying her recordings to post on her website and on YouTube. “When I wrote it, it was about where I’m at in my relationship, but things like that are universal — it can also be about a parent, or a child.”
Smith, 41, wrote a handful of original holiday songs for “My Holiday” and contributes two more to the new EP — the title track plus “Tomorrow Is Christmas Day,” which captures a child’s sense of anticipation for the holiday. Those are complemented by new arrangements of “Silent Night,” “What Child Is This?” and “Auld Lang Syne” on the EP, which is being released Tuesday.
How is it possible to bring something fresh to a subject that’s been explored in earnest by songwriters for decades?
“That’s always the question at hand,” she said. “I haven’t got a clue. I just go to my place where I go [to write] and think about how does it make me feel? What do I want out of it? What do I want to give people? For me it’s the giving, the sharing, the time with loved ones, the arrival of a new year to let things go and start over again. It all builds up and builds up, and when I’m ready, I tap into it.”
