Sub Pop finds the one Nirvana fan who didn’t know Kurt Cobain died

If you’re feeling a slight rupture in the space-time continuum this week, that’s because one young Virginia Tech Nirvana fan has somehow time-traveled from the early ‘90s.

That’s the only explanation for this bewilderingly misinformed letter from a Hokie mascot. The letter, sent to the band’s one-time label Sub Pop and currently making rounds in rock blog-land, asked that the grunge trio record a video message in support of the school’s upcoming homecoming festivities.

This would be a monumental task, as the band’s singer Kurt Cobain died in 1994 in one of rock’s most tragic and famous suicides. Sub Pop posted an image of the letter on its Tumblr site, and it’s either some prime-cut trolling or perhaps the most delightfully uninformed fan mail ever penned (the label also suspects it could be form letter).

“It presents great publicity for them, and as Virginia Tech loves Nirvana, we’d love to have her in our video,” the anonymous student writes, apparently also unaware that Nirvana is not a singular “her” but a trio of men. The letter writer also seemed blissfully unaware of the band’s actual music -- “They would be one among artists including Big N Rich, Ying Yang Twins, the Cataracs, Slightly Stoopid, and three famous NFL Players.”

The label says it is “dressed up and obliged” and will offer some kind of response to the request. If former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl is game, perhaps a video-message sequel to “Fresh Pots” is in order?
