Coroner unable to determine cause of Donda West’s death
L.A. coroner’s officials said today they could not find a specific cause of death for rapper Kayne West’s mother, who died several days after undergoing plastic surgery performed by a well-known Brentwood doctor.
The coroner’s office said in a statement that Donda West died of “coronary artery disease and multiple post-operative factors” but that “there was no evidence of a surgical or anesthetic misadventure.”
The statement added: “Multiple post-operative factors could have played a role in the death. The exact contribution of each factor could not be determined.”
In November, West, 58, arrived at a Wilshire Boulevard surgery center for routine cosmetic surgery. The operation lasted 5 1/2 hours, after which she was sent home, according to the coroner’s office.
A day later, paramedics rushed an unconscious West from her home to a Marina del Rey hospital, where she died.
The coroner’s office’s initial review found that West died “as a result of surgery or anesthesia.”
West’s doctor was Jan Adams, who has appeared on such TV shows as “Oprah” and “Extra” and hosted his own plastic surgery show on the Discovery Health Channel. Earlier this year, Adams was served with a complaint from the Medical Board of California and state attorney general’s office seeking to revoke or suspend his medical license. The officials cited his multiple criminal convictions for alcohol-related offenses since 2003.
Adams has defended his handling of Adams’ case and said he doesn’t believe his actions in any way led to her death.
