Camera Ready: Emma Stone sets just the right tone

Even with a stylist and glam squad in tow, celebrities are not impervious to the occasional red carpet misstep. Young starlets in particular can test trends that don’t suit them, or they surrender to the safety of cookie-cutter ensembles that sometimes make it difficult to set them apart from the crowd.

But relative newcomer Emma Stone is neither over-the-top nor predictable. The 24-year-old actress has gracefully navigated her way through premiere and award show appearances looking polished, age appropriate and never over-styled.

Stone’s designer choices range from red carpet mainstays such as Calvin Klein and Lanvin to such lesser known names as Luca Luca and Jonathan Saunders. The style of dress varies from floor-length column shapes befitting her tall frame, to kicky cocktail frocks that remain tastefully just above the knee.

“Emma is very aware of her attributes and knows how to accentuate them by making smart clothing choices,” says Raul Melgoza, creative director of Luca Luca, the label behind the black-and-white polka dot dress Stone donned at the British premiere of her latest film, “The Help.”

Color and an adventurous silhouette are common threads among her outfit choices. The Calvin Klein dress she wore to this year’s Golden Globes was a risky melon hue that she managed to pull off with bronzed skin and freshly dyed platinum hair (the dress’s cool shade was a refreshing departure from the standard red, black or gold gowns that so often grace the red carpet at major award shows). She wore a Roland Mouret dress, done in a difficult shade of marigold, to the opening ceremony of the Deauville American film festival. Stone shined in the autumnal hue, looking relaxed, even utilizing the gown’s practical pockets.

And then there’s the Giambattista Valli cocktail dress from the designer’s fall 2011 collection that she wore to the New York premiere of “Friends With Benefits.” The funky fuchsia-and-red combination along with the exaggerated pink peplum looked perfectly charming on Stone, demonstrating that when high fashion hits the red carpet, there’s always room for whimsy, color and, of course, confidence.
