The Spy Game: ‘The Girl From ‘U.N.C.L.E.’

With the success of its sexy 1964-68 spy series “The Man From U.N.C.L.E,” starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum, NBC decided to do a spinoff, aptly titled ‘The Girl From U.N.C.L.E” in fall 1966. The series, which starred Stefanie Powers as agent April Dancer and Noel Harrison as her partner, Mark Slate, veered more toward camp and parody than “Man.” Critics and audiences didn’t buy it, and the series lasted only a year. “Girl,” which just arrived on DVD, certainly isn’t brilliant TV, but there’s something wonderfully fun about the show, especially the most famous episode, “The Mother Muffin Affair,” which features Boris Karloff in drag as a quirky London villain.
