Discovery Channel is heading back to the Old West for its next nonfiction series, "The West."
The cable network announced the series on Tuesday with a planned debut sometime in 2014. Robert Redford and Laura Michalchyshyn's Sundance Productions will produce the series alongside Stephen David Entertainment.
The series will chronicle the 40-year period of American history from the end of the Civil War to just after the turn of the 20th century, when the American frontier was a wild and sometimes violent place.
Each episode of the series will follow the stories of different iconic Western figures, including Jesse James, Crazy Horse, Wyatt Earp and Buffalo Bill.
Redford's Sundance Productions previously produced the Emmy-nominated Discovery Channel doc "All the President's Men Revisited" for Discovery, while Stephen David Productions produced "The Men Who Built America" for History.
