Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford reunite on ‘Today’

It’s been 12 years since they sat behind a desk together, but Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford picked up like no time had passed on NBC’s “Today” on Wednesday morning.

Philbin’s appearance began with an Aaron Sorkin-style walk and talk as Gifford escorted him from the street outside “30 Rock” and into the “Today” studio, where Matt Lauer waited.

Seated together, Lauer kicked things off with a spectacularly awkwardly worded question: “Do you think, Kathie Lee, [this] is like the human equivalent of riding a bike? Even though you haven’t ridden him for 12 years?”

“Hey! Don’t assume anything!” Gifford responded. While Philbin chimed in, “Is Matt into porn? What’s happening here?”

Philbin and Gifford were co-hosts for 15 years, from 1985 to 2000, when Gifford left their show and was replaced by Kelly Ripa.

The occasion of Philbin’s “Today” appearance was to fill-in for absent fourth-hour co-host Hoda Kotb.

Philbin even poked fun at Gifford and Kotb’s penchant for boozing during the show, quipping, “It’s always Winesday here,” while he was hosting.

The pair also resurrected their old habit of going through a stack of the day’s newspapers to discuss headlines.
