Shopping: A sparkling marriage for Sonia Boyajian, the Way We Wore

As the zeitgeist in fashion moves further away from cookie-cutter, trend-driven dressing, the concept of über-creative personal style as the height of modern chic is also pervading the bridal industry.

That’s why the new bridal headpieces designed by L.A. jewelry designer Sonia Boyajian for local vintage fashion boutique the Way We Wore are sure to resonate with brides looking for a fashion-forward flourish that doesn’t scream “bridal shop.”

The collection of handmade hair baubles — brimming with the designer’s signature bohemian whimsy — use new and vintage materials including silk ribbons and tulle, satin, sterling silver, Swarovski crystals, cubic zirconia gems, gold fill, bronze-toned metals and “of course lots of feathers,” Boyajian said. She designed the pieces with the Way We Wore in mind, but is also able to re-create them upon request through her website, https://www.handmadeweddings.net.

Romantic and charmingly artsy-craftsy, the designs — with prices from $350 for head combs to $900 for crowns — are for “a bride who does not necessarily want to go to a bridal shop to put her look together,” Boyajian said.

Stunning designs include a headband with a row of pearls in the front and a burst of tulle at the nape of the neck; a feathered comb anchored by clear gems wrapped in gold wire; and a wide comb peppered with silver wire-wrapped stones and gems, a coil of silver snaking out on one side.

“I love Sonia’s aesthetics,” noted Doris Raymond, owner of the Way We Wore. “And because she repurposes vintage bits and pieces, it absolutely fits into the store.”

Boyajian’s bridal headpieces are available at the Way We Wore, 334 S. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles. (323) 937-0878. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday; noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
