Look out, Andre Agassi: John McEnroe’s writing another memoir

Andre Agassi topped bestseller lists with his revelatory autobiography “Open.” What publisher wouldn’t want a fresh memoir from another tennis great?

Little, Brown scores with John McEnroe. The publisher announced Monday that it will publish a McEnroe memoir in 2014. “In this revelatory account of his personal struggle, McEnroe disquiets and reassures in his own original and unadulterated voice,” the publisher wrote in its release. “He writes as he plays, inspiring the reader while consolidating his status as one of the world’s legendary sportsmen.”

McEnroe was ranked no. 1 in the world singles from 1981-85, and was an outspoken character in a sport typically known for restraint. His 2002 memoir was titled “You Cannot Be Serious,” a cry he was known to shout at judges when they made what he considered to be poor calls.

Editor John Parsley said in a statement, “John McEnroe’s first book was a smash hit, and it’s a thrill to see him return to bookshelves with Little, Brown. John’s new book has been ten years in the making and for his millions of fans it will be well worth the wait!”

In addition to his career on the court, McEnroe has been a commentator, coach, talk show host, art gallery owner and occasional actor. He and his first wife, actress Tatum O’Neal, have three children; he’s a father of two with his current wife, musician Patty Smyth.

McEnroe’s new memoir will address “the challenges of an ex-champion seeking reinvention,” according to the release. The book will be “a personal odyssey, a blend of anecdote and reflection that re-evaluates the meaning of success.”

It does not yet have a title.
