Storefront Deli, home of the life-changing BLT, closes

Storefront Deli, a narrow neighborhood shop in Los Feliz that served pastries, thick sandwiches, bagels and a BLT “that could change your life,” is closed, confirms co-owner Chris Phelps.

The deli was opened last year by Phelps and partner Zak Walters, who together also own Salt’s Cure. The deli’s walls were lined with photos of old delis, the huge counter at the front was filled with salads, breads and meat. A few stools near the entrance and some low benches outside were the few choices if you wanted to hang out.

They offered coffee from local roasters for $3, and for 50 cents you could get “lousy coffee” – whatever they found at Smart & Final.

In his review, restaurant critic Jonathan Gold called it “a perfected version of the places you find on every block in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Philadelphia or the older parts of L.A.”

“Like a skateboarder who practices jumping a particular curb 600 times, just because it is there, Phelps and Walters seem to set almost random goals for themselves just to see if they can achieve them.”

Most of what was sold at Storefront was made in-house: deli meats, cured fish, breads, croissants, pastries and even the cream cheese.

Phelps said he hopes to “incorporate some of those elements” in their next project.
