The Source Restaurant: The ‘70s vegan cultural hot spot gets a pop-up, documentary

Share

The Source Restaurant, the ‘70s vegan hot spot run by Father Yod and his spiritual cult, is returning to Hollywood as a pop-up. The restaurant will take up residence at the Cinefamily theater May 10 to May 16.

The reappearance of the restaurant coincides with the premiere of “The Source Family,” a documentary chronicling the lives of the ‘70s Utopian living experiment that included The Source Restaurant, a rock band and plenty of women dressed in flowing robes. The documentary will begin its weeklong run at the theater May 10.

The original The Source Restaurant was a fixture on Sunset Boulevard, known for its healthful vegetarian, vegan and raw cuisine, and the draw of its founder Jim Baker, an ex-marine who later became known as Father Yod. All the female and male cooks and servers sported long hair and took part in meditation before and after hours creating a spiritual atmosphere that attracted the likes of John Lennon and Warren Beatty -- some of the restaurant’s Hollywood regulars.

The reincarnated version will feature original recipes prepared by both New York chef Anne Apparu (18th Restaurant) and Thank You For Coming, an L.A.-based group that specializes in experimental communal cooking. Apparu will man the kitchen May 10 to 12 and Thank You For Coming will take over May 13 to 16.

The festivities begin Thursday with a premiere party at the Standard Hotel. But before the party starts, there will be a white magic blessing at 6:45 p.m. at the parking lot across from the hotel where the old restaurant used to stand. Party doors open at 7 p.m. and the film screening follows at 8:30 p.m. Tickets to the party and screening are $18 or $50 for VIP.

There will also be a sacred herb workshop May 11 and a demonstration of The Source Family rituals on May 12. The Source Family rock band, Ya Ho Wa 13, will also make an appearance with a performance at the Cinefamily on May 11.

The Source Restaurant at Cinefamily will be open May 10 5 p.m. to midnight; May 11 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.; May 12 12:45 p.m. to 11 p.m.; May 13 to May 16, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
