Shopping: Jack Spade opens Venice branch

Share

Jack Spade is the latest New York native to move into a beach bungalow on Venice’s Abbot Kinney Boulevard.

Jack Spade, the men’s counterpart to women’s bag maker Kate Spade, was founded by Kate’s husband Andy in 1999. The couple sold their shares of the company in 2006, and both brands are owned by Liz Claiborne. Jack Spade has evolved from a core collection of heavy-duty carryalls made of heavy canvas and Waxwear treated cotton to a young men’s clothing line rooted in the classics — Oxford shirts, chinos, polos and trenches.

Jack Spade’s all-white Craftsman beach bungalow in Venice, formerly a Kangol retailer, resembles a swingin’ 1960s bachelor pad with an abstract painting hanging over the mantle of a decorative fireplace and framed John Baldessari prints decorating a side wall. Shop furnishings are all midcentury antique store finds. The Los Angeles location is the third stand-alone Jack Spade store; two are in New York.

Cuan Hanly, New York-based vice president and general manager of the Jack Spade brand, targeted the burgeoning beachside thoroughfare because the neighborhood had the ideal Jack Spade customer — in spades. “Abbot Kinney appealed to us — it felt like our brand — it’s an artistic community, lots of architects,” Hanly says.

Half of the 650-square-foot bungalow is devoted to accessories. The core carryall collection is arranged around a large bay window. New totes include a canvas “coal” bag ($195) dipped in paint. Another seasonal find is an untanned leather coal bag ($195) and matching wallet ($110) embossed with the saying “no tan lines.” Other items include key clips (starting at $35) and plaid cloth wallets (starting at $50).

The adjoining long room showcases summer gear, such as gingham short-sleeve shirts ($145), candy-striped shorts ($135), the Blainville chino pant ($145) and the Driskill unlined lightweight sport coat ($450).

Gift items found throughout the store include a $95 barbecue apron with “Pop” embroidered in the front, cards that read “nice parking” to place on errantly parked vehicles ($15) and rear-view mirror dice ($48). To really fit into the Venice ‘hood, dog leads and toys are also sold.

In summer, Jack Spade, like its New York counterparts, plans to sell restored vintage bikes ($300) on its front porch.
