Ham cam: A 24-hour live feed of nothing but pigs

Ever wonder what a pig does all day? Well, now you can watch a live feed of nothing but pigs, 24-7 with the ham cam.

In celebration of Pig Week, which is devoted to all things pig, Modern Farmer magazine has launched a ham cam. It’s set to capture a 24-hour live feed of Fannie the Sow and her six offspring from the Pettitoes backyard farm in Warwick, Mass.

It’s not exactly the puppy cam, the camera that captures the lives of a group of adorable puppies all day as they play and nap. The ham cam looks at a caged area with a lot of hay, a little snow and a small house for the hogs.

The magazine has also previously launched a goat cam and a lamb cam.

“Several years ago I convinced my husband that it would be a good idea to raise American Guinea hogs, a small heritage breed that works well in a backyard setting,” said Pettitoes farm owner Claudia Lewis. “I hope that the ham cam is a positive experience for folks, and though it is still snowy and cold, Fannie and her crew are a lively example of the wonders of backyard farming!”

So far we’ve seen a single pig walk around, and stick its nose in some hay, but the magazine promises a little action around 1 p.m. PT, when the hogs receive leftovers from the local pizza parlor.

Lewis has trained the hogs, who live just outside her backdoor, to respond to a bell. She says they will jump and squeal when they hear the bell, which usually means kitchen scraps or pizza leftovers are waiting for them.
