Actor and activist George Takei was wondering Thursday night on Facebook, “Will I even be able to sleep tonight, awaiting the decision by the Supreme Court tomorrow?”

On Friday, he was up early celebrating the 5-4 decision that clears the way for same-sex marriage throughout the country.

“Oh Happy Day! The Supreme Court has ruled 5-4 that marriage equality is the law of the United States. Yes, ALL of these United States,” said the “Star Trek” actor, who married longtime partner Brad Altman in September 2008.

“I have waited decades for this day, and my heart is full of joy and my eyes wet with tears,” his Facebook post continued. “Let the celebrations begin, and may the happy couples live long and prosper together. #‎LoveWins #‎OneFamily.”

The 78-year-old and his now-husband were among the first gay couples in California to obtain a marriage license, and they wed in the small window before Prop. 8 kicked in that November and defined marriage in the state as between a man and a woman. That law was later found unconstitutional. Altman changed his last name to Takei in 2011.

“My eyes shine with tears as marriage equality is ruled the law of the land,” he said on Twitter, again rocking the #LoveWins hashtag. “What a pride weekend it shall be!”

The 45th annual San Francisco Pride Celebration & Parade is happening Saturday and Sunday, after the Los Angeles LGBT pride celebration two weeks ago in West Hollywood.

“We truly do stand on the edge of a great moment in history,” Takei had said Thursday on Facebook, posting a pro-marriage video that he said left him with a lump in his throat.

He earned nearly a half-million “likes” in the process.
