‘Magic Mike XXL’ trailer: Channing Tatum and the boys strip, tease

Share

The full trailer for “Magic Mike XXL” has arrived with a truckload innuendo and a scant amount of clothing.

The follow-up to the 2012 male-stripper tale finds Channing Tatum’s ex-dancer turned entrepreneur agreeing to take a road trip with his former colleagues — including Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer and Adam Rodriguez — for one last blowout performance in Myrtle Beach, Fla.

The 2-minute clip starts off coy, with shots of Tatum looking pensive on a bench, Bomer meditating on the beach and a van driving down a two-lane highway. But things get, er, interesting when Manganiello’s character (whose full moniker is unprintable in a family newspaper) begins strutting his stuff and dousing himself with water in a gas station mini-mart.

The trailer then delivers a flurry of serpentine dance moves, bared abs and titillating wordplay. Some of the best lines come from Jada Pinkett Smith’s new ringmaster, who at one point reminds the guys, “It’s not bro time, it’s showtime.”

Set for release July 1 from Warner Bros., “XXL” does indeed promise to deliver a show; the real question is whether it will have some smarts to go with the spectacle, as director Steven Soderbergh’s original did. (Inspired by Tatum’s own life, the film earned strong reviews and grossed $114 million at the domestic box office.)

Gregory Jacobs, a longtime Soderbergh collaborator, directed this time around, and Soderbergh remained close by as cinematographer and editor (under his pseudonyms Peter Andrews and Mary Ann Bernard). Tatum and producing partner Reid Carolin once again wrote the script. We’ll see soon enough if they can recapture the magic.
