Live Nation plans new, temporary Orange County outdoor venue

Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre may soon be heading to the great venue graveyard, but a new outdoor concert complex could rise nearby.

Live Nation and developer FivePoint have announced that they are seeking permits to build a 12,000-seat venue adjacent to Orange County’s Great Park.

The firms plan on a summer 2017 opening date.

“Orange County has become a major concert stop for touring musical acts and Live Nation is committed to keeping the long tradition of live summer concerts alive and growing in this region,” said Bret Gallagher, president of Southern California Live Nation, in a statement.

“Live outdoor music is so important culturally and economically for Irvine and the region,” added Irvine City Council member Christina Shea.

The new venue, located within walking distance of Irvine Meadows, would open on an interim basis, and any new complex would still need approval from the city of Irvine.

The master plan for Great Park includes a general plan for an outdoor amphitheater on-site, but no design for a permanent venue has yet been finalized.

Irvine Meadows, which opened in 1981, will host Gwen Stefani for its final shows on Oct. 29-30.
