2017 SAG Awards fashion: Black and white and red (and pink) all over

Maybe it was a reflection of the political climate beyond the red carpet, but the stars turning out for the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium on Sunday seemed to break down into two stark contrasts — black and white — with a few black-and-white ensembles thrown in for good measure.

Those who made a statement in black included Tracee Ellis Ross; Amanda Peet in a black crepe-sablé gown with floral-sequined embroidery from the Spring 2017 Michael Kors Collection; Kathryn Hahn in a black velvet gown from the Fall 2016 Adeam collection; and Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji.

Those who wore all (or mostly) white included Kerry Washington in a white, off-the-shoulder floral-textured Roberto Cavalli gown; Natalie Portman (in a very Jackie-esque pouf-sleeved Dior ensemble); female actor in a supporting role winner Viola Davis (in a fitted Vivienne Westwood); Danielle Brooks (“Orange Is the New Black”) in a white Christian Siriano pantsuit; Brie Larson in a form-fitting Jason Wu gown; and one of the night’s best-dressed men (and supporting actor winner), Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”), who turned out in a white silk, one-button, shawl collar tuxedo, white shirt and navy satin bow tie by Ermenegildo Zegna Couture.

Annalise Basso (“Captain Fantastic”) turned out in a red Bibhu Mohapatra goddess gown making her on trend and landing her on our best-dressed list.

Splitting the difference — in outfits that combined black and white — were Rami Malek in a Dior Homme ensemble that included a black dress shirt, black tie and a black-and-white tuxedo jacket; Emma Stone in a black asymmetric draped dress with lily-pad embroidery from the pre Fall/Winter 2017 Alexander McQueen collection; Sofia Vergara in a fully embroidered silver and black strapless tea-length dress from Zuhair Murad’s Spring 2017 ready-to-wear collection; Sarah Paulson, who wore a white jacket over her black strapless Vera Wang gown; Thandie Newton in a white Schiaparelli gown with black animal embroidery detail on the skirt and a futuristic armor-like piece jutting off her right shoulder; and double-nominee Janelle Monáe (in all fairness, though, the singer-actress has long made the black-and-white color combination her sartorial signature).

But it wasn’t all a study in black, white and black and white, thanks to the pops of color — most notably shades of red and pink — as worn by young Millie Bobby Brown (a custom, red Emporio Armani dress); Sophie Turner (in a stunning Louis Vuitton dress); presenter Sophia Bush (in a pink, strapless Marchesa confection); Annalise Basso in a red goddess gown from the Bibhu Mohapatra Fall 2016 collection; and Bryce Dallas Howard, who opted for a sparkly maroon number from L.A.-based label Dress the Population. Spinning the color wheel for the fellows was Tituss Burgess (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), who made an impression in a bright blue Malan Breton suit and matching necktie. And two of the evening’s best-dressed women went with brightly striped dresses — Yara Shahidi in Naeem Khan and Michelle Dockery in Elie Saab.
