‘Degrassi’ ending its run after 14 seasons

Take one last look: “Degrassi” will call it quits this summer after 14 years on the air.

The Canadian teen-soap franchise will wrap up with a two-week, 12-episode series wind-down in late July on TeenNick, the network confirmed on Thursday.

The countdown will start with a one-hour episode airing July 20th, culminating with a finale on July 31.

In the final TeenNick episodes, the senior class will be shown getting ready for prom and graduation.

“For an incredible 14 seasons, ‘Degrassi’ has been a groundbreaking show tackling so many important topics that real teens face in their everyday lives,” said Keith Dawkins, senior vice president and general manager of Nicktoons, TeenNick and Nick Jr. “In the final episodes on TeenNick and through the hour-long special and social activations, we hope to say goodbye in a way that is both fitting to the show and ‘Degrassi’’s passionate fan base.”

The current version of “Degrassi” was originally called “Degrassi: The Next Generation.” The series is part of a franchise of four teen soaps, all set in Toronto. The original, “The Kids of Degrassi Street,” dates back to a 1979 premiere on Canadian TV.
