What time are the 2016 Golden Globe Awards?
Clear your Sunday night -- or set your DVR -- the 73rd Golden Globe Awards ceremony, the first big show of the 2016 awards season, is happening this Sunday.
WHAT TIME DOES THE SHOW START? WHAT CHANNEL?
The ceremony, taking place at its usual haunt, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, will air live from coast to coast on NBC at 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. The glitzy festivities will kick off with a pre-show on NBC at 4 p.m. Pacific.
WHO IS HOSTING?
Comedian and three-time Golden Globe winner Ricky Gervais will host the boozy annual affair for the fourth time. The “Derek” star served as host from 2010 through 2012 before passing the torch to power duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. His time at the post and acerbic wit saw a ratings gain of 6% over the 2009 telecast.
The sharp-tongued comedian promised not to hold back: “I’m never trying to undermine the moral fabric of America. I’d rather people laugh than gasp. But if they gasp, that’s good too,” he said Friday on the “Today” show.
THE NOMINEES
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which hosts the partylike ceremony, will dole out the awards to winners in 25 categories -- 14 in film and 11 in television.

On the film side, the lesbian romance “Carol,” the sprawling “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the frontier epic “The Revenant,” the kidnapping drama “Room” and the journalism biopic “Spotlight” will vie for top honors in the drama motion picture category. Facing off in comedy are the housing-crisis tale “The Big Short,” David O. Russell’s Jennifer Lawrence starrer “Joy,” the science and space adventure “The Martian,” the Melissa McCarthy comedy “Spy” and Amy Shumer’s dating dalliance, “Trainwreck.”
On the TV side, Fox’s hip-hop soap “Empire,” HBO’s sweeping epic “Game of Thrones,” USA’s cyber thriller “Mr. Robot,” Netflix’s drug cartel drama “Narcos” and Starz’s period drama “Outlander” are up for drama series, while Hulu’s “Casual,” Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black,” Amazon’s “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle” and HBO’s “Silicon Valley” and “Veep” are nominated in the comedy category.
THE PREDICTIONS
Los Angeles Times awards expert Glenn Whipp shared his picks for this year’s winners, explaining why “Mr. Robot” might be a surprise TV honoree.
To recap -- and set the stage for next week’s Oscar nominations -- the investigative reporting movie “Spotlight” is expected to take home the drama prize and Leonardo DiCaprio may clinch his third Golden Globe (out of 10 nominations) for his role as wounded trapper Hugh Glass in “The Revenant.” The actor, who has been nominated for an Oscar five times without a win, should be in contention to pick up an Academy Award too. The lead actress race seems to be a toss-up between “Carol” star Cate Blanchett, a nine-time Globes nominee and three-time winner, and “Room’s” Brie Larson.
As for musical or comedy, Adam McKay’s financial-meltdown film “The Big Short” was tapped by Whipp as the clear winner, had Matt Damon’s Mars-stranded astronaut tale “The Martian” not been in the same category. The placement of Ridley Scott’s science adventure raised numerous eyebrows on nominations morning and made it a tough contender against the star-packed “Big Short.” Damon is also expected to take home the lead actor prize, while pals Lawrence (“Joy”) and Schumer (“Trainwreck”) and their new high-profile friendship will keep things interesting in the lead actress race.
“Mr. Robot” and its star Rami Malek are expected to win big in the TV drama category, while “Outlander’s” Caitriona Balfe is expected to deliver an upset in the lead actress race. On the comedy side, Amazon’s transgender dramedy “Transparent” appears to be the clear pick, while Gael Garcia Bernal’s kooky conductor from “Mozart in the Jungle” and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Emmy-loved Selena Meyer of “Veep” are expected to get some love.
