Hot Property: Singer Neil Young’s Hawaiian retreat is an oldie but a goodie
Singer-songwriter Neil Young has put his oceanfront estate on the Big Island of Hawaii on the market for $24.5 million.
Set on a craggy peninsula between two bays, the three-acre spread features a Hawaiian-style beach house dating to the 1920s, two two-bedroom guest cottages, two greenhouses and a swimming pool with a pool house.
Verandas that step down to lawn take in the ocean views and provide indoor-outdoor living space. The main house has five bedrooms, four bathrooms and close to 3,000 square feet of living space.
The Waialea Bay property includes 830 feet of frontage on the Kohala Coast near a world-class surf spot and white sandy beaches.
Many species of coconut trees, a terraced vegetable garden and fruit trees such as lemon, papaya, pomelo and mango complete the grounds.
Young, 69, got his start in the 1960s with such bands as Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash, which then became Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. His song “Ohio,” written in the aftermath of the deadly clash in 1970 between students and the Ohio National Guard at Kent State University, became a seminal hit for the group.
The Grammy-winning singer and guitar player went on to have a highly successful solo career. He has released 35 studio albums and spent the summer touring. Among his other memorable hits are “Old Man” and “Heart of Gold.”

Emmy winner gives up a prize
Famed TV writer and producer Steven Bochco has sold his Richard Neutra-designed home in Encino for $4.725 million.
Named the Milton Goldman Residence for its first owner, the Midcentury Modern-style house dates to 1951. Architect Neutra used long walls of glass to bring in views of the home’s natural setting, which today includes a reflecting pool, stepping stones and a dining patio.
The updated single-story house, expanded to 4,234 square feet of living space over the years, features wood ceilings, living, dining and family rooms, a den, five bedrooms and five bathrooms.
A swimming pool with a spa, lawn and a sports court make up the rest of the wooded third-of-an-acre grounds.
Bochco, 71, worked on the series “Hill Street Blues” (1981-87), “L.A. Law” (1986-94), and “NYPD Blue” (1993-2005), all of which won Emmys. He is creator-writer-executive producer of the current crime drama “Murder in the First.”
The property came on the market in May at $4.995 million. Bochco paid $2.85 million for it in 2006.

1920s home suits old soul
Dita Von Teese, the small-waisted model known for bringing burlesque dancing back into vogue, has bought a stunning Tudor Revival-style house in Los Feliz for $2.83 million.
Entered through a rotunda that evokes a castle turret, the 1927 home blends traditional features with tasteful designer updates. Wood-beam cathedral ceilings, gothic arches and decorative medallions are among the architectural details.
An English kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a breakfast area, living and family rooms, a den/office, four bedrooms, three full bathrooms and two powder rooms are within the 3,200 square feet of living space. That should be plenty of room for Von Teese’s vintage china, tea sets and eggcup collections.
Sheltered by mature pine and oak trees, the third-of-an-acre property includes gardens, multiple patios and decks, a swimming pool and a pool house with a wet bar and a sauna.
Von Teese, 42, graced the cover of Playboy in December 2002. The multi-talented fan dancer is a costume designer and actress with her own lingerie line. She is the former wife of musician Marilyn Manson.

Pitcher sells home base
Former Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito, who currently plays for the Athletics’ Triple-A affiliate, has sold his hillside estate in Kentfield, Calif., for $8.15 million.
He bought the house in 2007 for $8.863 million, records show.
Built in 2002, the Mediterranean-style home sits behind gates on more than two acres with sweeping views of Mt. Tamalpais and Phoenix Lake.
The main house, entered through a rotunda foyer, opens to a step-down living room set beneath beamed cathedral-style ceilings. A formal dining room, a family room, a center-island kitchen and a wine cellar/tasting room are also within the 7,116 square feet of space.
Designed for indoor-outdoor entertaining, telescoping walls of glass in the public areas open to a wide terrace and formal gardens. There are four bedrooms and five bathrooms including a detached guesthouse.
Outdoors, an outdoor kitchen, a fireplace and an infinity-edge pool and spa make up the relaxed grounds. A large motor court and a three-car garage mark the entrance to the home.
Zito, 37, spent his entire 14-year career with the A’s and Giants, winning the American League Cy Young Award in 2002 with the A’s and two World Series titles with the Giants. After sitting out the 2014 season, Zito returned to the A’s on a minor-league contract.
The house, originally listed in 2012 for as much as $10.495 million, more recently was priced for sale at $8.995 million or for lease at $25,000 a month, records show.

A key change in Encino
Singers and actors Idina Menzel and Aaron Lohr have bought an Encino house for $2.675 million.
The Mediterranean-style home is set on more than three-quarters of an acre with cityscape and canyon views.
Built in 1959 and since updated, the 4,708-square-foot house is entered through hand-carved Peruvian doors. Living spaces include connected living, dining and family rooms, an updated kitchen with a center island, an office, a laundry room, five bedrooms and six bathrooms.
Sliding glass doors open at the back of the house to a covered patio, lawn and a swimming pool with a spa.
The Tony-Award winning Menzel, 44, played Elphaba in “Wicked.” She was in “Rent” on Broadway and in the 2005 film version. The powerful singer has been on a dozen episodes of the series “Glee” and voiced Queen Elsa in the 2013 film “Frozen.”
Lohr, 39, was also in the stage and film version of “Rent.” He starred as a youngster in the late 1980s series “Bustin’ Loose.”
