5 injured in Santa Monica blaze

Three Santa Monica police officers and two residents they rescued from a burning apartment were hospitalized Sunday afternoon, officials said.

One of the residents sustained burns and was in serious condition, Assistant Fire Chief Tom Clemo said.The officers and the other resident suffered from smoke inhalation and were expected to be released Sunday evening.

The fire was reported at 3:33 p.m. in an apartment behind a commerical building in the 1000 block Montana Avenue. The police officers were the first to arrive on the scene. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire, Clemo said.
