Boy found unharmed after thief grabs car he was sleeping in

An 8-year-old Northern California boy who was sleeping in the backseat of his father’s car when it was stolen from the family’s driveway was found unharmed early Monday.

It appears that the car thief parked the vehicle in a residential neighborhood a couple of miles away and escaped, leaving Brock Guzman inside, said Officer Kathryn McCormick of the Fairfield Police Department.

Brock slept through the whole thing, she said.

“As a parent, knowing that my child slept through all of it would be a relief,” McCormick said. She also said Brock has been reunited with his parents.

The child was abducted about 4:45 a.m. when his dad was warming up the car and went back inside the house for a few moments, McCormick said.

The boy’s parents were getting ready to take their children to school in Napa when someone got into the still-running silver Toyota Corolla and drove off, McCormick said.

Police had initially said the boy was being dropped off at his mother’s house but later clarified their statement.

The car was spotted by a resident just after 8 a.m. in the 400 block of Dahlia Street, less than a half mile away from Interstate 80, authorities said.

Police said they believe that the theft was a crime of opportunity and that Brock’s brief abduction was not intentional. No arrests have been made but investigators are canvassing the neighborhood where the car was found and asking neighbors if they have any security cameras that could help identify the thief, McCormick said.

The car was being towed to a police yard, where forensic teams would comb it for clues, she said.
