A Seattle bank guard was seriously injured when a man allegedly tried to steal his gun and fired wildly before shooting himself, authorities said.

The 46-year-old security guard and the unidentified assailant were involved in a fight outside of a Bank of America branch near 23rd Avenue and Jackson Street around 11 a.m., according to Seattle police officials.

Det. Patrick Michaud, a police department spokesman, told the Los Angeles Times that both men were taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. The guard was taken into surgery within the past hour, Michaud said.

It was not clear what led to the initial fight or how the man got the guard’s gun, according to Michaud, who said police will review surveillance footage from the bank to gain a clearer picture of the clash.

Both men were shot at least twice, according to Michaud, and detectives had been unable to interview either man as of 1 p.m.

No one else was injured, Michaud said.
