Denard Robinson says he shouldn’t have been driving Sunday morning when he was so tired.

He isn’t kidding.

The Jacksonville Jaguars running back and a female passenger were rescued from a Chevrolet Impala he had driven over a sidewalk and into a retention pond, according to the Florida Times-Union. Neither was injured.

Robinson said in a tweet Tuesday: “I should not have been driving that late or when I was that tired, but again, I’m just glad that everyone was safe.”

The Jaguars said in a statement the same day: “The team is aware that running back Denard Robinson was involved in a single-car accident over the weekend and is thankful that nobody was injured.”

Just how tired were Robinson and passenger Marissa O. Staples? They were both asleep when police found them inside the car, which was submerged on the driver’s side and still sinking, according to the police report.

When an officer knocked on the passenger’s side window, the report said, Robinson “opened his eyes and then went back to sleep.”

The officer kept knocking, and finally Staples rolled down her window and asked, “What’s up?” according to the report. After the officer explained the situation, Staples attempted to roll her window back up, the report said, but the officer was able to reach in and unlock the door.

Staples refused to exit and had to be removed from the car, the report said, while a confused Robinson tried to open the driver’s side door three times before finally getting out through the other side.

A second officer determined Robinson, who has rushed for 914 yards and five touchdowns in three seasons with the Jaguars, wasn’t impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Apparently he was just really sleepy.
