Racing! You don’t have to Justify his performance in an allowance race

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as the Triple Crown trail just keeps getting more interesting.

Wow. Justify is the real deal. The latest superstar in the making from the Bob Baffert barn turned an allowance race into little more than a workout, winning the fifth race by 6 1/2 lengths.

Eric (Manny) Sondheimer was on the scene and gives us the full report. Just click here.

This gives Baffert all kinds of options. After Saturday’s San Felipe disqualification, he said he may ship McKinzie, instead of running in the San Anita Derby. But that was in the heat of the moment. Justify would give him a great starter in the SA Derby. Or, he could renew the rivalry between Bolt D’Oro and McKinzie at Santa Anita and ship Justify to, say, Arkansas. That’s the path he took with American Pharoah and we know how that turned out.

It would be a surprise if Baffert ran both McKinzie and Justify in the Santa Anita Derby. Another complicating factor for Justify is he has to finish at least second in his next start, providing it’s in a major prep, in order to get enough qualifying points. Running in a race with both Bolt D’Oro and McKinzie would make that a tall order.

Anyway you cut it, this is an exciting 3-year-old season, unlike last year when all West Coast hopes were shattered when Mastery was injured in the San Felipe.

And speaking of the San Felipe, what a race. And, regardless of which side of the outcome you were on, it exemplifies horse racing at its best.

Ed Golden of Santa Anita was prowling the backside on Sunday morning and brings all the latest information.

“Bolt came back fantastic, ate his food, his legs are tight and cold, so we live for another day,” winning trainer Mick Ruis told Golden. “He’s going to build off that race, because we didn’t have him all the [cranked].”

Jockey Javier Castellano still hasn’t committed to ride Bolt in the future but Ruis has a deadline so we should find out this week. If Castellano stays east, Hall of Famer Victor Espinoza wilI most certainly get the ride.

Jim Barnes, chief assistant to Baffert, told Golden that McKinzie came back “very good. We’re in great shape.”

I can’t wait until the Friday newsletter when Jon White reveals his latest Top 10 poll.

A wagering question

A couple of subscribers asked a great question about why the 11th race at Santa Anita on Saturday was an “all” in wagering. Well, as you know, I’m not the go-to guy on these questions but I happened to be walking to the paddock area with our handicapping savant Bob Ike before the sixth race, the San Felipe, on Saturday.

He was correctly predicting that if the last race, on the turf, was taken off that surface that it would bring the animus of the betting public. Bob explained that if a race is taken off the turf, or changes any surface, AFTER the wagering has started that the affected race is deemed to be an “all.” It makes a lot of sense because you handicap the chance of a horse on turf or dirt entirely different. You can’t quarrel with the rule, but you can question when these decisions are made.

The rain on Saturday was supposed to start around 11 a.m. but it was delayed. When Bob and I were in the walking circle it was spitting. But, by the time the chaos was happening in the winner’s circle after the marathon inquiry, it was raining. By the time the Big ‘Cap went off it was pouring. Could this have been anticipated? Possibly. Was it just optimistic that the last race could stay on the turf? Probably.

Santa Anita review

It was supposed to be 6 ½ furlongs down the hill but was moved off the turf course to dirt. We hate to digress, but do you ever wonder why tracks always try and make the surface sound better than it is? Santa Anita is usually pretty honest but when you go to Louisville for the Kentucky Derby, it could be a course that Michael Phelps could win a medal on but it’s labeled wet fast. (OK, Santa Anita did snooker us during Saturday’s Big ‘Cap, which trainer John Sadler and owner Kosta Hronis kept calling muddy and the track called it wet fast.)

Anyway, Tough Sunday won the $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes by a length. The horse was bred by Nick Alexander, who was beside himself at the victory.

“I’m shaking, I’m going to cry,” Alexander told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “We thought several times that he was the best horse in the race and he would just miss. With this one, everything worked out.”

Steve Miyadi was the trainer and Joe Talamo was the jockey. Tough Sunday paid $11.60, $5.80 and $4.40.

First time winner

Matt Dinerman, the voice of Golden Gate, came in with this special update from up north.

“Twenty-five-year-old jockey Ferrin Peterson picked up her first career win aboard Lovely Lioness in the second race on Sunday. Along with riding in races, Ferrin is currently a veterinarian student at U.C. Davis and has worked with numerous barns and veterinarians on the Golden Gate Fields backstretch.

“After the big win, Ferrin was treated with buckets of cold water and shaving cream from her fellow riders. ‘That was the greatest feeling!’ quipped Ferrin. She was all smiles after her first career victory. Over the past few weeks, Ferrin has ridden many horses for trainer Anthony Stabile Sr., who has 25 horses at the Bay Area racetrack since joining the trainer colony this fall.”

Big races review

A look at graded stakes or races worth more $100,000 or more on Sunday.

Santa Anita: $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes, 4 and up, 6 ½ furlongs. Winner: Tough Sunday ($11.60 to win)
