Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck could try something new during Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars: hold a clipboard.

At a news conference Friday, Chuck Pagano called Luck questionable for Sunday’s game, though the Colts coach remained “supremely confident” he would play against the Jaguars.

Luck has been limited in practice all week because of a shoulder injury, giving way to veteran Matt Hasselbeck to take most of the snaps.

Luck’s absence from the open portion of practice prompted one reporter to ask if Luck was in the state of Indiana.

“That might be the craziest question that I’ve gotten in the history of football,” Pagano responded. “Yeah, he’s in the state.”

Luck has started every game for the Colts since he was drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in 2012 and had never appeared on an injury report until this week. His last missed start was in 2009, when he was a freshman at Stanford.

Through the first three weeks of the NFL season, eight teams have been forced to start their backup quarterbacks.

The Colts signed Josh Johnson on Friday, another indication that Indianapolis is preparing to go forward with Luck on the sideline.

Hasselbeck appeared in four games last season, completing 30 of 44 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Sunday would be his first actions since Week 16.

“That’s my job,” Hasselbeck told the Indianapolis Star. “I need to do that. It’s one of the things required by my job. If necessary, I’ll be ready to go.”

Hasselbeck was a longtime starter at Seattle from 2001 to 2010, helping the Seahawks reach the playoffs five times and the Super Bowl in 2005. Along the way he was named an All-Pro in 2005 and named to three Pro Bowl teams.

He also played for the Tennessee Titans before joining the Colts in 2013.
