Michael Phelps completes his USA Swimming suspension
Michael Phelps competes in the 100-meter butterfly at the American Short Course Championships on March 5. Phelps’ result did not count because he was under suspension from USA Swimming.
Six months have passed since Michael Phelps was arrested for DUI and suspended by swimming officials.
Now his penalty has ended and he is ready to swim again.
Phelps will headline an Arena Pro Swim Series meet in Arizona later this month. He chose the same meet to end his retirement last spring.
“My suspension is finally up!” he wrote on Twitter. “Time to get back in the pool and race again!”
Katie Ledecky, Natalie Coughlin and Ryan Lochte are also scheduled to compete in Mesa but most of the attention will certainly be focused on the man who ranks as the most successful Olympian of all time.
Phelps was arrested in Baltimore last October and, after pleading guilty, was given 18 months of probation.
As part of his swimming suspension, he was removed from the American team that will travel to the world championships in Russia next summer. Officials have left open the option of placing him back on that roster.
The Arena Pro Swim Series meet is scheduled for April 15-18. Phelps has yet to commit to trying for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
