Bishop Gorman quarterback Tate Martell commits to Texas A&M

USC’s quarterback recruiting has seen better days.

Top 2017 quarterback target Tate Martell from Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas announced Thursday that he would play at Texas A&M.

Along with USC, Martell considered offers from Alabama, Washington and Michigan.

USC also missed on commitments from its top two quarterback targets in the 2016 recruiting class, Shea Patterson from Shreveport, La., and K.J. Costello from Santa Margarita High.

Patterson committed to Mississippi and Costello chose Stanford.

USC offered and received a commitment from Glendora High’s Matt Fink after Patterson and Costello made their decisions.

Martell, 5 feet 11 and 190 pounds, committed to Washington in 2012, when he was in the eighth grade, and Steve Sarkisian was coach of the Huskies. Martell withdrew his commitment to Washington in January and until a few weeks ago appeared to be on the verge of a reunion with Sarkisian, who is now at USC.

Martell passed for 2,537 yards and 40 touchdowns as a sophomore during the 2014 season. He also rushed for 433 yards and five touchdowns.

Martell is the product of quarterbacks coach Steve Clarkson, who also tutored former USC quarterbacks Matt Cassel, Matt Leinart and Matt Barkley, as well as Trojans third-year sophomore Max Browne.

USC also has made an offer to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa from St. Louis School in Hawaii. Tagovailoa made an unoffical visit to USC’s campus in June to participate in Rising Stars Camp. He has not set a date to announce a commitment.
