USC secondary surprises in first scrimmage of training camp

USC beat reporter Gary Klein and Lindsey Thiry recap the Trojans’ first scrimmage of training camp.

USC’s first training camp scrimmage Monday appeared as just that, a first scrimmage.

Referees threw several flags, quarterbacks missed open targets and coaches hollered at freshmen to join their special-team assignments.

However, despite some first-scrimmage miscues, there were several standout plays.

Sophomore Jonathan Lockett and freshmen Iman Marshall and Marvell Tell each intercepted a pass.

Third-year sophomore receiver Steven Mitchell caught two touchdown passes, including a long catch-and-run play, though it was called back because of a procedure penalty before the snap.

Junior tailback Justin Davis, who spent the first week of camp sidelined because of a hamstring injury, was impressive and showed little sign of a setback.

And the offensive line created enough holes for freshman tailback Ronald Jones to demonstrate his speed.

USC is scheduled to return to practice Wednesday at 8:45 a.m.
