Boys’ basketball: Marvin Bagley III looks as good as advertised in debut for Sierra Canyon

6-11 junior scores 27 points in Sierra Canyon victory

Sierra Canyon is fortunate they don’t allow NBA scouts to attend high school basketball games, because the Trailblazers would have had trouble fitting in all the scouts that would have wanted to see the debut of 6-foot-11 junior Marvin Bagley III on Monday night.

The transfer from Arizona who had to sit out last season after moving into the area performed up to expectations. There were four dunks, 27 points and just someone so big, skilled and talented that it’s pretty understandable why everyone is excited about his future.

Sierra Canyon, ranked No. 1 by The Times, finished with a 93-61 victory over Chaminade. UCLA Coach Steve Alford was in attendance to see his future player, Cody Riley, who scored 21 points. But Alford surely has his eyes on Bagley, who appeared winded at times, which was understandable considering he hasn’t played in a real game since 2015.

“I was tired at times,” he said. “I’m going to be ready for the next game.”

Sierra Canyon had some defensive issues, allowing too many open three-point shots, but it clearly has the makings of a potential state championship team depending on how everyone blends together. The combination of Bagley and Riley will certainly produce plenty of dunkathons.
