Girls’ volleyball: Players penalized for participating in sand tournament

Share

More than 20 girls’ volleyball players must sit out two matches as punishment for participating in a four-on-four sand volleyball tournament sponsored by Long Beach State in Huntington Beach on Sunday.

At least one, school, Santa Margarita, has to forfeit a match it won on Monday against Rosary because a player who played in the match also participated in the sand tournament.

CIF Bylaw 600 states, “A student on a high school team becomes ineligible if the student competes in a contest on an ‘outside team,’ in the same sport, during the student’s high school season of sport.”

Some parents are criticizing the decision, insisting sand volleyball and indoor volleyball are different sports.

Schools have been self reporting violations after the Southern Section became aware of the violation.

The tournament was a fundraiser and was co-ed and included participants wearing Halloween costumes.
