33 cars damaged in drive-by pellet gun attack in Costa Mesa

Authorities probe pellet gun shootings of 33 cars in Costa Mesa neighborhood

At least 33 cars in an Orange County neighborhood were damaged when an apparent vandal went on a shooting rampage with a BB gun early Tuesday, police said.

Costa Mesa police officers who arrived about 3:30 a.m. found that about a dozen cars had been damaged by gunfire.

Throughout the morning, more reports came in about vehicles with broken windows, authorities said.

"It was mainly windows shot out, using apparently a BB gun," Lt. Vic Bakkila said.

The damage stretched along Flamingo Drive, Mandarin Drive, Goldeneye Place, Mallard Drive, Pelican Place and Albatross Drive, authorities said.

A house on Pelican Place also was hit, Bakkila said.

Investigators believe the shots were fired from a car cruising through the area, Lt. Greg Scott said.

Police are working to identify all the victims. A damage estimate wasn't immediately available.

Police asked that anyone with information about the case call investigators at (714) 754-5637.
