An ambulance driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel before crashing and flipping the rig with a patient inside Wednesday morning in Grantville, San Diego police said.

The patient did not appear to be injured in the crash, and was taken on to another hospital, along with an emergency medical technician who had been riding in the back. The technician suffered a minor injury, police said.

They were headed to Kaiser Permanente Zion Medical Center and were less than a block away when they crashed at Friars and Mission Gorge roads.

A witness at a Denny’s at the intersection reported about 4 a.m. that an the ambulance had crashed into a parking lot across the street.

The United Ambulance Co. rig apparently had been traveling on Friars, hit a curb and a traffic signpost, and toppled onto its left side.
