Authorities are investigating the death of a man who apparently jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro on Sunday afternoon.

The man, described by witnesses as white or Latino and in his 20s, had climbed up the bridge above the roadway by the time California Highway Patrol officers arrived on the scene around 5:20 p.m.

But CHP spokesman Alex Rubio said the officers never had a chance to talk with him.

He landed in the main channel of the Port of Los Angeles, near the Catalina Express ferry terminal. Divers from the L.A. Fire Department recovered the body.

Phillip Sanfield, a spokesman for the port, said there have been at least two other suicides from the bridge in the last two years, including the director Tony Scott in 2012.
