A 20-year-old San Diego man has been arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run in an incident in which a pickup truck was launched off a San Diego freeway on-ramp and crashed into a restaurant parking lot 50 feet below.

Jose Uribe was arrested Monday. He remains in county jail on a felony charge of hit-and-run, as well as unrelated charges of probation violation, false imprisonment with violence, and destroying or concealing evidence, according to jail records.

The freeway incident occurred Sunday afternoon on the transition ramp from westbound Interstate 8 to northbound Interstate 805 in Mission Valley.

Kenneth Fruedenvoll of San Diego was driving on the ramp when his 2006 Ford F-250 was struck by a 2000 Ford Excursion driven by Uribe, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Fruedenvoll’s pickup drove through the guardrail and hit the back wall of Dave & Busters restaurant before crashing to the parking lot.

Uribe fled in his truck, according to the CHP.

Firefighters used extraction tools to pry Fruedenvoll from the crumpled wreckage of his Ford F-250. He was conscious when taken to a local hospital with possible neck and back trauma. He remains hospitalized.

Fruedenvoll, a mechanic on active duty with the Navy, was the only person injured, and restaurant patrons were apparently unaware of the incident.
