SAN DIEGO -- A fire at a Roman Catholic church in the San Diego suburb of Spring Valley was “purposefully set,” authorities said Wednesday.

Five engines from Cal Fire responded to the fire in the sanctuary of Santa Sophia Church, which was reported just before 8 p.m. Tuesday. No injuries were reported.

Cal Fire investigators and deputies from the bomb/arson unit of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said they have determined that the blaze was “purposefully set,” and that they are continuing to examine the fire scene.
