Ruby, a Beluga whale, dies at SeaWorld San Diego at age 38

After 17 years at SeaWorld San Diego, Ruby, a beluga whale, dies

A female beluga whale named Ruby died Thursday at SeaWorld San Diego at age 38.

Ruby was at SeaWorld for 17 years and gave birth in 2010 to Pearl, one of five beluga whales now on exhibit at the Wild Arctic attraction.

A necropsy is planned to determine the cause of death.

"As an ambassador for Arctic animals, Ruby enhanced the awareness of beluga whales for the more than 40 million guests who have visited Wild Arctic," SeaWorld said in a statement.

Ruby came to San Diego from another marine park.
