A big rig carrying a load of carrots collided with a car Monday night in Antelope Valley, injuring five people and clogging the street with the produce.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash at 8:38 p.m. and closed the intersection of 170th Street and Avenue N in Lake Los Angeles as crews worked to clear mounds of carrots from the roadway.

A SigAlert due to the wreck was canceled at 1:04 a.m. Tuesday, said CHP Officer Tony Polizzi.

Televison news footage showed piles of carrots on the street, apparently stopping one car that had lost control, KTLA reported.

There were varying reports about how many of those involved in the wreck were taken to the hospital, but a supervisor with the Los Angeles County Fire Department said two vehicles overturned in the crash. Of the five victims, one was critical, and three others were in moderate condition.

Polizzi said a helicopter was used to take at least one person to a hospital.
