Man arrested in connection with alleged Canyon Country hate crime
Authorities arrested a man in Bell early Saturday morning in connection with an alleged hate crime last week in Canyon Country.
Omar Chaparro, 20, was involved in a confrontation with two other men July 19 and stabbed one of them, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
Officials said two friends -- one black, one Latino -- were walking in the 14800 block of Jakes Way when they were accosted by Chaparro, a Latino, who began spewing racial slurs at the black man and challenging him to a fight.
The black man’s friend stepped in to protect him, and the two Latino men began fighting, according to the sheriff’s department. During the fight, Chaparro allegedly stabbed the Latino man in the side and then fled.
The victim was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released, according to the sheriff’s department. The two friends’ names were not released.
