Police in Huntington Beach are asking for the public’s help after the body of a man who had been shot to death was found in an alley in the city’s old town area.

Authorities found the body of a man believed to be in his 40s near the 200 block of Memphis Avenue about 8:30 a.m. Sunday, police said in a statement. Officials said the victim had been shot several times.

A black beach cruiser bicycle was found near the victim, but police said they were unsure if it belonged to him.

Authorities have not released the man’s identity, but he was known to frequent the area, Lt. Gary Faust said Monday.

Police received a call about 11 p.m. Saturday near Memphis and Alabama Street reporting firecrackers and yelling in the area, according to a news release. But the responding officers didn’t find anything unusual.

Although authorities were notified of the body Sunday morning, the timing of the fireworks and yelling report lines up with the time of the man’s death.

Anyone with information regarding the incident can call Huntington Beach police at (714) 960-8825 or the tip line at (714) 375-5066.
