Madre fire near Azusa mostly contained despite wind warning
The Madre fire, which has burned through 268 acres of brush and chaparral in San Gabriel Canyon, remains 90% contained, the U.S. Forest Service reported on its website Saturday.
The fire broke out Monday night north of Azusa and was mostly contained by Friday.
At one point this week, more than 500 firefighters were battling the blaze; three suffered injuries. Since then, the number of firefighters working on the fire has been scaled back to 173.
Firefighters have had to contend with steep terrain and unforgiving conditions; the National Weather Service issued warnings Saturday about gusty winds across much of Southern California.
Road closures around the area have been lifted, according to the U.S. Forest Service website. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
