Emergency crews were continuing to search Saturday for a missing swimmer who was last seen struggling in a rip current off the coast of Huntington Beach late Friday.

Lifeguards in boats and a police helicopter searched the water between Sixth and Fourth streets until 11 p.m., police said.

The swimmer was last seen about 9:30 p.m., seemingly caught up in the rip tide, police said.

Authorities said some witnesses saw the man – believed to be wearing a tank top and shorts – was “twirling erratically” in the water.

One of the man’s friends was interviewed by authorities, but no details on that conversation were released, police said

Lifeguards resumed their search shortly 6 a.m. Saturday.
